Once upon a time
there was Devilland instead of Lake
Peipsi. Master devil Chaos lived there. Together with the other devils he
organized championships of the Devilland. The championships had three events:
running, the long jump and throwing. Only devils could take part. Kalevipoeg
had heard about the competitions and blended into the crowd with his costume
and got registered.
First
they had a running race. Kalevipoeg ran so fast that the ground looked like
being ploughed up. The devils started to whine about it. The second event was
ball throw. Kalevipoeg chose a massive stone and threw it very high and far,
the stone fell into the ground and he was again the winner. The devils started to complain about it and told Kalevipoeg to pull that stone out.
Kalevipoeg pulled with all his strenght,
got the stone out, but now there was a huge hole and he had ruined his costume.
The third competition was the long jump. Kalevipoeg jumped very far and again
caused a hole into the ground, but managed to win it as well. The devils
started to blate about the hole.
After
the championships Kalevipoeg headed for Tartu. His costume got stuck by the
gate at Devilland and was totally torn. Now the devils noticed it had been
Kalevipoeg who won all the races. All the pagans and devils and the other
horned creatures knew that water was Kalevipoeg’s weakeness which actually wasn’t
true. The pagans started to splash water and Kalevipoeg ran away, but the
others followed and kept splashing. Kalevipoeg was running, watched back and
noticed that the devils had fallen behind, so he decided to have a little rest,
but to his surprise he realized soon that he was almost being circled in. He
started to ran again because he didn’t still understand it was just pure water
they were throwing at him. The bigger and the smaller hole got filled with
water and all the devils got flooded and stuck under water with their houses. So
this is how the Lake Peipsi was created and as for Kalevipoeg, he began to help
people and they called him „Heaven’s warrior“.
