Last Thursday at 12.15 we started our journey from our school. When we had reached Matsalu we started to watch a film in RMK house and viewed an exhibition about Matsalu Nature Reserve. The house had stuffed birds and animals on display. Then we were given binoculars and we headed to a walking tour where we viewed and noted down different species of birds. I found the nature at Matsalu very beautiful. We also climbed up a viewing tower where we could see swans. Actually I liked Hereford cattle  most. After completing the hiking track we were quite exhausted. Our guide spoke a bit more and gave us worksheets to fill. Then we had lunch and we drove back to Kehtna.

Thursday

Johannes, Larsen and Hans-Martty accompanied by teachers Katre and Raigo went by the pond to measure today's water temperature and study the life in the water and around the pond. As ice has melted, the temperature was less than last Thursday by 2 degrees, +5C.

At the same time in the computer class
Anu, Diana, Signe, Maarja-Liis, Kelly, Sten, Marten, Kaarel-Eerik and Kenet  were searching for additional material about water plants, birds and animals. We have gathered enough material now and can finish off our presentation which hopefully will be translated into English next week. As we have scanned more photos than we need, we created another slideshow which is uploaded in previous post.

Spring is on its way . . .

Today's project meeting

We divided students into three groups: Anu, Diana, Signe, Kelly, Maarja-Liis and Marten were busy with finding the material for the presentation, creating the slide show and translating slides; Sten, Regina and Kenet typed some of the water stories which were created by form 7 students; Gladis, Johannes, Hans-Martty and Larsen went by the local pond. On today's observation they didn't see much life yet either, so they just measured the temperature (within the past week it has risen by 7 degrees) and its ph level. Teachers Meeli, Edda, Evelyn, Katre and Raigo were coordinating today's tasks.

Thursday's meeting

Yesterday our regular Comenius meeting was attended by fewer students than normally because some students had to study maths and some students took part in a competition in Rapla. Teacher Meeli divided students into groups, so Anu, Kelly, Maarja-Liis, Johannes, Sten, Marten and Kenet started searching for information about fauna and flora in Estonian waters. Teacher Raigo helped them in the computer class. We decided to divide our presentation into 3 parts: the Baltic Sea and its plants and animals, inland rivers and lakes and Kehtna's local bodies of water. For the latter Meeli, Katre, Edda, Johannes, Sten and Kenet went to explore the local pond and to take photos. Hopefully students can finish their research by next Thursday and we can continue already with more precise preparation.

My Sicily

Kehtna Basic School's library now has a book "My Sicily", which is written by an Estonian woman who has lived in Palermo since 1998. The book is easily readable, doesn't contain many difficult historical facts, but gives a good overview in order to undertsand Sicilians and their culture better. Reading this books is more or less compulsory for those teachers and students attending the project meeting in Augusta. Teachers Edda and Evelyn have already read it.

Partner schools

ESTONIA: Kehtna Primary School is situated in the village of 1,200. There are no big towns nearby, although the capital Tallinn is just 60km to the north. We are surrounded by forests, bogs, farmland and therefore paying extra attention to nature studies and the environment is important to us. We are a school of the Green Flag and a Health-Concious school. There are 155 students and 20 teachers in our school. Students are aged 7-17.

ITALY: Liceo Classico "Megara" con sezione scientifica annessa is a secondary school for students aged 14-19. It mainly offers three different courses for classical, scientific and social science studies. The school mainly serves students from Augusta. Our school is located in a very important area for its nature, history, archaeology and tourism. Our suburban town of Augusta is very near to Siracusa, one of the oldest and most important Greek colonies in Sicily. Our students are all members of "Legambiente" which is a national leading environmental organization which offers educational programs in schools. We live by the sea and our area is very rich in waterways, rivers and ponds.

FRANCE: College Claude Bernard is in a suburban city (Grand-Quevilly) with about 30,000 inhabitants. A town with 400,000 people called Rouen is near to us. The area has little industry nowadays following the closure of the chemical factories and the Renault car plant.

TURKEY: Tepeköy Ilkögretim Okulu is a public school serving children aged 7-15, starting from pre-school till the 8th grade. It is a rural school and caters for 226 students and 18 teachers. Our school is in Nevsehir (Cappadocia Region), being situated in agricultural region. Our region does not have sufficient water resources and we need to focus on environmentally-friendly options.

SPAIN: IES Concepcion Arenal is a secondary education centre located in Ferrol, a town with 70,000 inhabitants in the region of Galicia (north-west of Spain). There are 85 teachers and 700 students in compulsory (12-16 years old), post-compulsory (16-18 years) part and in vocational training.
